Consultative Stakeholders’ Workshop: Effective Agriculture Risk Management for Resilient Growth in Rwanda (March 2015)
The World Bank’s Agriculture Risk Management Team, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture Animal Resources, conducted a joint field mission in March 2015. The mission aimed at assessing current risk management measures in the areas of water management for crop production, plant pest and disease management, and water and feed availability for livestock production. This mission was a follow-up mission to the Sector-Wide Agriculture Risk Assessment that was conducted in the spring of 2014.
In line with prioritized risks identified during the risk assessment, namely drought and erratic rainfall for crop and livestock production, and pests and diseases for crops, the team looked at risk management mechanisms under the following areas:
Agriculture Water Management
Livestock Feed Availability
The team identified gaps in existing risk management approaches, and made recommendations for strengthened risk management within the identified areas. The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources arranged a consultative stakeholder meeting on March 26, 2015 for the team to share preliminary findings of the assessment and solicit feedback from key stakeholders. In addition to discussing the potential effectiveness of proposed interventions in mitigating identified risks, the stakeholder meeting also attempted to rank the measures according to estimated costs vs. benefits.
