Welcome to FARMD Focus | Issue 1

This first edition of the FARMD Focus introduced readers to the tools and functionalities availale on the FARMD website, while also explaining a bit about what FARMD is. This issue contained a broad range of materials on general topics related to ag-risk management to demonstrate for readers they tupes of materials and resources that can be found on the website.

Price Volatility and Agricultural Risk Management | Issue 2

In recent years, agricultural commodity prices have been influenced not only by fundamental supply and demand factors, but also by new forces such as the 'financialization' of commodites and the diversion of some agricultural commodites to biofuels; with discussions intensifying on the role that these 'new forces' are having on increasing price volatility and on inducing speculation. This edition of FARMD FOCUS entitled “Price Volatility and Agricultural Risk Management” provides a set of resources and practitioners' views on this topic to inform and facilitate dialogue amongst the FARMD community.
 

Index Insurance in Agriculture | Issue 3

Insurance is a small part of an array of approaches and instruments that are available to manage risks. Agricultural applications of index-based insurance –a form of insurance- have emerged to overcome some of the difficulties associated with traditional agricultural insurance products in developing-countries. Although the development and application of indexing instruments are still in the early stages, there are a number of potential advantages as well as challenges associated with their implementation. Many pilot projects have started, but scaling up index-based insurance projects has only happened in a few developing countries (notably India). This issue of FARMD FOCUS puts together a set of resources and perspectives on this topic. We hope you will enjoy the readings.
