Enabling Environment Risk in Rice: Additional Resources

Media

CCTV (August 2012) | Thailand is in danger of losing its position as the world's biggest rice exporter. A government scheme to buy rice from farmers at inflated prices has led to a huge stockpile. Because the state pays above market rates, experts say it'll make a loss even if it can sell the crop - but the policy seems poised to continue. Farmer Sombat Imoat is enjoying good times at the moment. He expects to harvest 60 tonnes of rice this year, bringing him a high income. He's one of many farmers to benefit from a policy by the Government of Thailand, to buy rice at around a third higher than the market value. Watch Now

LinkAsia (August 2011) | This video discusses the issue of rising rice prices in Vietnam. This rise is not due to market volatility, but rather due to policies that encourage hoarding of rice amongst farmers who are awaiting higher prices for their crops. This leaves rice buyers in a difficult situation. In spite of record production, rice merchants are being forced to raise prices to have enough to cater to their customers. Watch Now

Fast Cloud Films (2010) | 'Filipino Rice Policy' is an eye opening short documentary that explores the world of politics surrounding Agriculture in the Philippines. Myths, corruption, and the lack of understanding have allowed the Philippine Department of Agriculture to guide Filipinos towards a facade of food security. Former Secretaries of Agriculture Carlos Dominguez, Senen Bacani, and Roberto Sebastion along with many other well known rice policy experts believe that the Department of Agriculture has been leading Filipinos in the wrong direction for too long, and it is now time to change direction. TiTV Weekly (2008) | Rising tuitions have added burden to students, and now the increase in fertilizer prices is giving many farmers in indigenous communities a hard time. The first rice crop has been reaped in east Taiwan and Amis farmers in Duli Community are ready for the second rice crop ahead of the harvest festivities. But the farmers say they may be forced to leave the land fallow if the price hikes in fertilizers, fuels and raw materials continue. Watch Now
