Smallholders in the Era of Globalization

Author:
Otte, J.; Upton, M.; Costales, A.

This presentation was given at the AHAT BSAS International Conference in Kohn Kaen, Thailand, 15 November 2005. The main points of the presentation were that demand for food of animal origin is saturated in industrialised countries and growing elsewhere; the only way for the livestock industries of industrialised countries is to expand exports or to invest in other countries. The investment in other countries depends on high demand density and a legal and infrastructure framework. Agricultural statistics are presented for global, Vietnamese and Indian farming.

Research Investments and Market Structure in the Food Processing, Agricultural Input, and Biofuel Industries Worldwide

Author:
Keith Fuglie, Paul Heisey, John King, Carl E. Pray, Kelly Day-Rubenstein, David Schimmelpfennig, Sun Ling Wang, Rupa Karmarkar-Deshmukh

Meeting growing global demand for food, fiber, and biofuel requires robust investment in agricultural research and development (R&D) from both public and private sectors. This study examines global R&D spending by private industry in seven agricultural input sectors, food manufacturing, and biofuel and describes the changing structure of these industries.
