Agricultural Sector Risk Assessment in Niger: Moving from Crisis Response to Long-Term Risk Management

Author:
World Bank

Niger is a case of living perpetually with risk, thus more emphasis on long-term structural solutions, rather than short-term quick fixes, is required to improve the resilience of the agricultural sector.

Featured: A probabilistic approach to assess agricultural drought risk

Author:
Harikishan Jayanthi, Greg Husak

The probabilistic approach to drought risk assessment in this study consists of conducting a frequency analysis of the gaps between water demand and availability in the crop root zone during the crop season, constructing appropriate drought vulnerability models, and deriving loss exceedance curves and return period losses for selected crops in drought prone countries of Africa.

A risk analysis framework for aquatic animal health management in marine stock enhancement programmes

Author:
Devin M. Bartley, Melba G. Bondad-Reantaso, Rohana P. Subasinghe

In light of limited supplies of fish from natural populations, stock enhancement is being considered as one means of helping to meet the demand for seafood products from an ever-increasing human population. The technology to produce large numbers of early-life stage aquatic organisms in hatcheries is well-developed, and the use of alien species, although controversial, has also created new fisheries in some countries. Stock enhancement often requires technical interventions in the rearing process of aquatic organisms that may substantially change how an organism interacts with pathogens.

Qualitative Release Assessment for the Re-Introduction of HPAI H5N1 Virus from Neighboring Countries into Ghana

Author:
Turkson, P.K.

This Briefing considers the question: "What is the risk of re-introduction of HPAI H5N1 virus into Ghana from neighboring countries (Burkina Faso, C??te d???Ivoire and Togo) via cross-border trade and movements involving live birds, poultry products, people and fomites?" A high level of uncertainty associated with the risk estimates developed in this work points to significant gaps in the knowledge of the epidemiology of HPAI in West Africa.
